Detailed Notes
Following the lead they got from the coal-stained note, the pair tracked down a nearby coal mine, and went inside hoping they would find some answers.
Unfortunately, those answers weren't immediately forthcoming. Once they were noticed by the foreman of the mine and asked to leave, though, Strix noticed Leif out of the corner of her eye, and he was turning down a side chute behind them.
Ignoring the calls from the foreman that the chute was caved in and unsafe, they took off after Leif, Strix in the lead. It didn't take them long to realize that an old torch sconce was actually a lever for unlocking a false wall, and Nilkas was the first inside - hardly feeling the impact of the two crossbow bolts triggered by a pressure plate as he entered.
The three guards inside were playing a card game as he entered, but that stopped the instant Nilkas cleaved one of them in half in a single blow, ignoring (or not hearing) Strix's shout to only knock people out. The remaining two barely remembered to grab their swords before fleeing out of the room, screaming warnings to the people deeper in the hideout.
Rounding another corner, Nilkas caught a ballista bolt in the shoulder, then registered the call about a 'warning shot' that was absolutely not a warning shot. He made quick work of the remaining people, then saw Leif running into the next room.
In the deepest room, it was only Leif and another man, a grizzled and scarred behemoth of a man wielding a flail against Strix and Nilkas. There was a brief moment of silence before the man issued a challenge to Nilkas and accepted in kind - "Our battle will be legendary!". Already injured from the bolts, the challenger brought Nilkas down while Strix managed to knock Leif unconscious, and register that it was up to her to fight the imposing figure glaring down at her.
She won, but only barely -- and Nilkas' consciousness was more important to consider than the fact that she had just made her first kill.
After searching the room for clues and re-composing themselves, they left the mine to find a post with a blue-burning torch and a note nailed to the post - that they'd be in touch.
Strix's Notes
We found a Scarlet Circle hideout at the coal mine. I tried to stop Nilkas from killing anyone but he’d cut a man nearly in half before I even rounded the corner. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that sight… its the first time I’ve watched someone die. After that was mostly a terrifying blur. Nilkas went down while fighting a big brute. For some reason, right then and there, I didn’t care if I died, I just wanted to make sure Nilkas lived. I barely managed to take the big bastard down by myself (with Artyom of course). Another first, now I’ve taken a life with my own hands…. Gods I thought I was ready, but I wasn’t.
I managed to rouse Nilkas, and we barely walked out alive. Taking this as a lesson to be more careful and try to be prepared for whatever comes our way. On the way out we found a note attached to a post with a blue flaming torch. Whoever wrote it said we did a good job, and they would be in touch. Time will tell what is in store for us.
Nilkas' Notes
We got another tip to look into the mines. We went and found a secret entrance, and proceeded to enter. We found 3 poor men inside. They went for blades but were too slow. I cleaved the first man but I made a mistake. As I made the swing I heard Strix yell to not kill anyone. These were just ordinary people. Not trained killers or zealots to a cause. Too late for that. My tactic to overwhelm with savagery works too well for them. One man ran while his other mate was dropped by another giant swing. Ran after to hear, “This is a warning shot” to turn the corner and see a ballista aimed at our entrance. Lucky bastards hit me with said “warning shot”. They knew they made a mistake as I sprinted straight after them. The gunner didn’t stand a chance. My battle trance dampening my companions cries as I enter the next room. Stood before us was the poor man who ran from the first room, Lief, and a huge man with a Flail. Battle started and I killed the man who ran as Strix knocked out Lief. The leader soon took to me. But it seems that the ballista bolt did more damage than I thought. I was too slow to block a strike and fell. I awoke to Strix in tears and the leader bleeding nearby. I realized she never killed a man. She was looking at her hands covered in blood. Not mine nor hers. The leaders. I wanted to hug her and console her but I felt it was not the best idea as this was my fault. Also barely being conscious didn’t help. Leaving the mines with Lief in tow we found a note on a blue torch. Looks like some group likes us and will keep in touch.
