Human (Qilaw) and Elven (Thynnon) lands share a common border, separated by a mountain range (north/south, forming a bit of a NE/SW diagonal) with one major pass (east/west)

Over time the elves had moved further south toward more fertile land and loosened their hold on their northern holdings

Orcs and giants from the mountains and beyond moved to take that land, and in a rare moment of weakness the elves called on Humanity from across the pass to aid in pushing back against the invading force, in exchange for splitting the land in question

They succeeded, and the act of sharing land produced what always comes from humans and elves living in close proximity: half-elves

Thanks to a long-held stigma against the barbaric half-breed, many elves pushed to move even further south, blaming humanity for tainting their noble-blooded brothers and sisters

After many years of political conflict some actual skirmishes, the humans and elves managed to broker a deal: a new nation would be formed that would allow the two estranged nations to communicate and trade without needing to do so directly. The majority of this nation's citizenship would be the half elves that had nowhere else to go and elves and humans who were sympathetic to their plight

Several hundred years later, tensions between humanity and elvenkind are still tight, but the intermediary kingdom (Tarawn) had gained a fair amount of autonomy and renown under their current King, the half elf Rodfyr Regulus, surviving his human wife by some 20 years

Recently though, things have taken a turn for the worse, as the King has been taken ill (and is probably gonna die like tomorrow) by some unknown disease that even the nation's best clerics have been unable to heal, and his only kin is woefully underprepared to take on the mantle, as not only is she inexperienced in the realm of politics, being brought up as a Knight, she, by some bizarre combination of genetics, magic, and misfortune, is fully Elven - the combination of which throwing her to-be subjects into turmoil before she even takes on the inevitable role of Queen.
