- Nobody wants all these kobolds dead
- The Scarlet Circle has been tracking the PCs. Fight time?
Kobold Town
As you open the stone door, the first thing you notice is the faint glow of bioluminescent fungi and mosses that cling to the walls and ceiling. The glow is soft, casting shadows in blues and greens across the rough stone surfaces, and almost appears to be glittering. As your eyes adjust to the new lighting, you begin to be able to make out hard outlines in the distance, and the sounds of skittering and chattering coming from deeper within. A kobold, clad in light armor rushes out of the darkness toward you - their arms are stretched toward you and their hands are throwing off multicolored lights in all directions.
The kobold is [Krikss], one of the archers that took off running before the players could kill him. Currently, his hands are full of gemstones, as an offering to the players.
Soon after Krikss makes it to the players, another kobold runs out of the darkness, clad in an inky-black leather, with a sash made of the same glowing fungus that coats the ceilings and walls. This is [Klikk], the tribe's translator and expert in non-kobold cultures.
[!!!] Point out that the feeling is now so strong that it seems to have a physical effect on the world - that they can feel the ground beneath their feet pulse with every beat.
After verifying that the PCs aren't just going to try to kill everyone, the two warily (Krikss more warily than Klikk) allow them to come into town:
Soon, you find yourself in the midst of a bustling kobold city. The bioluminescent glow is stronger here, illuminating the cave in a beautiful and eerie light. The kobolds move about their daily lives, tending to their mushroom gardens, and many of them carrying around small pickaxes and satchels.
The structures of the city are made of a mix of stone, wood, and woven materials, with many of the buildings built into natural alcoves and crevices in the cave walls. Bridges and walkways connect different levels and sections of the city, and small streams and pools of water trickle through the streets.
Notable NPCs
- Krikss - archer
non-offensive and quiet, but suspicious of outsiders - Klikk - translator
They have a thing for over-explaining things to kobolds, this is mostly borne out of a fascination with other cultures. "You see, in human cultures [...]" - Kysj-Sjerit - leader
Deeply devoted to Kosj, in a megachurch leader sort of way, but the tribe generally trusts her. - Visk - child
- Skirv - craftsman
Talented metalworker, very meticulous and takes great pride in his work, but standoffish when working on a project - Hisk - vendor
Friendly and outgoing, and an expert in the cave systems in the area
Quests?
- The kobolds have been plagued by a group of vicious orcs that have been attempting to raid their settlement. Until now, they have been able to hold the orcs at bay, but one day they may get though, and might not be as kind as you travelers. Is there any way you would be able to prevent them from attacking us further?
- In search of more to offer to God, we have dug into a cave that happened to be occupied. A number of miners were killed before we were able to seal off that passage, but we would like to eliminate the possible threat to our civilization if we could.
- The creature is a Large magma elemental (actually 3 of them) [CR 8]
- Rewards are shadow blending darkleaf cloth leather armor with 1/day Invisibility (CL 3) for Strix and eyes of the eagle for Nils (toss a hat of disguise in there too lmao)
The Ruler's Rest
Further still, there is a tunnel leading away from town. At the mouth of this tunnel lies a rug with a stone altar on it. Covering the rug and the altar are cut gemstones, chunks of gold, and a large block of platinum. There is a wooden sign hammered into the wall of the tunnel saying something in [Draconic]. Its exact wording is unclear, but its obvious that death waits for anyone who proceeds further.
The altar has ~2600 gp worth of gems, 2400 gp worth of gold, and the block of platinum is worth 218 pp.
This area is a vast cavern with high ceilings, adorned with shimmering crystals that reflect the bioluminescent glow of the cave's plant life. The ground is covered in a layer of glittering, crystalline dust, and in the center of the cavern lies a massive pile of glittering treasure, upon which the equally-massive form of a sleeping red dragon rests. The air is thick with the scent of brimstone, and the distant sound of dripping water echoes throughout the space. The walls of the cavern are adorned with intricate carvings of the dragon engaged in fierce combat and towering over cities. At the back of the cavern, a small stream flows from a hidden source, winding its way through the chamber and providing a source of fresh water for the town.
Kosj-Sjerit-Valignat-Vorel is an Adult Red Dragon, and has been taking a short nap over the past ~80 years. In the time he's been sleeping, this kobold society has sprung up around him, worshipping their sleeping god and showering him with gifts of gems, precious metals, and anything else they happen to find that gleams with value.
Notably in this horde of gold and gems, there are two items that very clearly have more value than the rest [DC 10 Appraise]
- A golden sword with a strong aura of magic
- This sword is Razarac, the Weed-o-mancer, but polymorphed into a sword for some reason
- When picking up the sword, the holding character has to make a [DC 18 Fortitude] save or be overcome by a wave of relaxation and euphoria (dazed for 1 round). They also experience a strong craving for food [no save] for the entire period they are in contact with the sword.
- A intricately-cut diamond as large as a fist, inscribed with a familiar-looking pattern of runes
- This gem is one of the Gems of Power, and the players should be able to recognize that the inscription is similar (but not the same) to the one carved into the Ruby they encountered earlier.
Fresh Air
Coming back out into the air, its immediately obvious that Charlie the Horse is gone, but not as immediately obvious as to why until an arrow flies out of seemingly nowhere. [Roll Initiative!]
the Scarlet Circle is back for revenge. Lucien Vanko and part of his crew have tracked the party to here, with the aid of some mercenaries, and wants to catch everyone unawares
